South Georgia takes wind out of Twisters, 40-37 (North Little Rock, AR) – South Georgia seems to have Arkansas’ number. Arkansas led at halftime, but South Georgia rallied past the Twisters and won 40-37 in front of 4061 fans at Alltel Arena.

It’s the second time this season South Georgia has defeated Arkansas. The Twisters (5-2) struck first when rookie quarterback Davon Vinson ran for a score from two yards out to put Arkansas up 9-0. South Georgia (5-2) would take the lead to start the second quarter when Chavis McCollister caught the first of his two touchdowns to give the Wildcats a 14-9 lead. Robert Kilow put the Twisters back in front with a 57 yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Arkansas seemed well in control when Pierre Thomas intercepted D. Bryant on the next play. But Vinson was sacked in the endzone for a safety by Ed Wrangler to give the lead back to South Georgia at 16-15.

Arkansas roared right back by scoring 14 unanswered points to take a 29-16 lead. The Twisters wouldn’t score again until 2:17 left in the game. Bryant found McCollister for the second time in the half on a 36 yard scoring completion and the Twisters led 29-22 at halftime. South Georgia scored twice in the third quarter when Bryant hit Scott Cloman on a 20 yard pass play, then capping off a scoring drive by running it in from one yard out to give the Wildcats the lead at 34-29. The Wildcats added one more score to start the fourth quarter when Bryant hit James Robinson for a 30 yard strike that put South Georgia up by 11. Arkansas wouldn’t go away quietly when Vinson found Kilow for a 24 yard score and the two point conversion pulled the Twisters within three points at 40-37. The Twisters defense had to get a stop on the ensuing drive to have any hopes of trying to win the game. Those hopes faded when Bryant hit McCollister for a 38 yard gain on third down and the Wildcats ran the clock out from there.

SOUTH GEORGIA 49, FLORIDA 38 May 12, 2007, Albany, Georgia - Chavis McCollister caught 16 passes for 178 yards, the final one for 40 yards and a touchdown with :35 seconds left in the game as #8 South Georgia defeated division rival #6 Florida in front of a home crowd of 6,190 at the Albany Civic Center. It was the first time the Wildcats had beaten the Firecats since relocating from Cape Fear to Albany in 2005. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 4-2 on the season, and the Firecats fall to 4-3. D. Bryant continued his good work, completing 27 of 36 passes for 256 yards and 5 touchdowns, none bigger than his final one to McCollister that put the game away. Bryant connected with Scott Cloman 8 times for 61 yards and 2 scores, and he threw TD passes to James Robinson and Derrick Lloyd as well. Bryant also scored a rushing touchdown for the Wildcats, as did McCollister and Lloyd.

Former Firecat Cory Bailey led all tacklers for the Wildcats with 11. Wallace was 27 of 43 passing for 323 yards and 6 touchdowns, finding Ethenic Sands 9 times for 144 yards and 2 scores. Former Wildcat Chris McKinney caught 11 passes for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Magic Benton hauled in 5 catches for 68 yards. The game remained close throughout between the two teams. Two critical plays, a fumble by South Georgia running back Derrick Lloyd late in the end zone seemed to give Florida new life with 6:24 left in the game.

But after punching out 2 first downs, South Georgia rose to the occasion and held the Firecats to 4 and out with 1:14 left in the game. After 2 straight running plays, Bryant found McCollister with the deep ball for the final score.
